Hair Thinning? You Need To Know The Causes Of Hair Thinning In Men?

Posted under hair-loss by Peter Albertson on Wednesday 30 September 2009

If you’re a man who has noticed some thinning of your hair lately then you need to learn a little more about the causes of thinning hair in men. There are some well recognised causes of hair thinning in men and most of them can be tackled successful.

It is reasonably well-known that the causes of thinning hair in men are a little different to the causes of hair thinning in women. By far the biggest cause of thinning hair in men is androgenetic alopecia, which you may know as male pattern baldness. This is a condition which you inherit from your forebears which means that you are genetically predisposed to hair loss. But this doesn’t guarantee that you will lose your hair. Even if your father and grandfather were both bald you may not be, they your chances are high.

Statistics show that around 4 out of 7 men will carry the gene for androgenic alopecia. Somewhere around 70 percent of men will experience some form of balding during their lifetime and a quarter of these will start to see thinning hair by the age of 30. By the age of 60 around 60 percent of men will suffer some hair thinning.

There are other causes of thinning hair in men but androgenic alopecia is the principle cause. Other causes of hair thinning include various medical conditions and medications such as chemotherapy. For anyone suffering from thinning hair are visit to the doctor is always worthwhile to eliminate the possibility of a medical problem.

If you take any medications and are suffering from hair thinning ask a doctor if the medication may be responsible.

Some other causes of thinning hair in men can be stress and diet. It is known that the Western diet high in consumption of red meat can result in a higher incidence of hair loss. Stress can also cause hair loss although this can be temporary, the hair often recovering after the stressful event is passed.

It seems clear that by far the most common cause of hair thinning in men is male pattern baldness. The question is, if you’re suffering, what do you do about it? Luckily there are some answers, however it is important to get onto the problem as soon as you become aware of it.

The mechanism by which the hair is lost in cases of male pattern baldness is now known and it comes down to plenty of male sex hormones. Men suffering from baldness are commonly chock-full of testosterone, and the testosterone creates another male hormone called DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) which is the hormone responsible for hair growth during puberty.

The testosterone creates DHT and the DHT attaches itself to hair follicles. The DHT then slowly strangles the hair follicle by limiting the ability of the follicle to intake essential nutrients important for good hair growth. Men with male pattern baldness have excessive DHT.

Once this process was known to science it was able to produce a treatment, and the result was the first male hair loss treatment approved by the FDA called minoxidil. It is known that minoxidil is effective in treating male hair loss in most cases.

It is possible to get minoxidil under a range of different product names however one company has produced a more successful approach to hair loss treatment using minoxidil. Minoxidil blocks the operation of DHT and this company also supplies a range of essential hair nutrients by means of supplements so that once the hair is able to take in proper nutrients again those nutrients are available to it.

This is a better approach than just minoxidil on its own.

As you can see there is a range of causes of hair loss in men, however the vast majority of men are simply suffering from genetically inherited male pattern baldness which if left untreated will continue until, for most men, some degree of baldness becomes evident.

Luckily there are treatments and if you want to find out which treatment combines the use of minoxidil with hair nutrition visit my website.

Don’t Be Concerned. Male Hair Loss Is Not Inevitable.

Posted under womens hair loss by Peter Albertson on Wednesday 30 September 2009

The good news is that if you’re a man, hair loss is not inevitable. Over the last few years the mechanisms of male pattern baldness have been well established by science and there are some excellent hair loss treatments that are now approved by the FDA and which are extremely effective. But if you’re a man the most important thing to remember is that hair loss can be treated, but baldness cannot.

Male pattern baldness is by far the most common cause of male hair loss. Men between 20 and 45, 95% of problems with thinning hair are the result of inherited male pattern baldness. Men’s pattern baldness is technically called androgenic alopecia. You inherited genes from previous members of your family.

It has been known for a long time that male pattern baldness was genetic but the actual mechanism that cause to hair loss was not understood. Until this mechanism was understood it was not possible to develop successful treatment for male hair loss.

The mechanism behind male hair loss which is now understood is this. Those who are genetically predisposed have the male hormone testosterone converted in their bodies into a 2nd hormone called Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, by enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. It is the DHT that causes the hair loss.

The DHT sticks to the base of hair follicles and, in effect, strangles the hair follicles by limiting the ability of the follicles to take up essential hair nutrients. Because the hair follicles cannot take up sufficient nutrients they thinning and die and there is insufficient reproduction of the hair follicles to replace the dead hair.

It’s well known that everyone loses hair everyday. The average person loses around 10,000 hairs everyday which are normally replaced. But those who are genetically predisposed to an excess of DHT find that more hair dies and less grows to replace it resulting in a slow thinning the hair and the development of a bald spot.

Once science understood this mechanism it was possible to develop a successful and effective treatment. There is an FDA approved treatment that goes by the name of minoxidil. Minoxidil is available under various product names but not all these work as effectively.

I have already mentioned the importance of good nutrition to hair health. Minoxidil increases the flow of blood to the hair allowing it to take up more nutrients and this frees up the hair follicles to increase intake of enough nutrients, but if there are insufficient nutrients available the hair cannot do this. Minoxidil does not supply the nutrients.

The best hair loss treatment makes use of minoxidil and at the same time it supplies the whole range of essential hair nutrients by means of oral supplementation. This two sword approach works much more effectively than simply taking minoxidil on its own.

Remember if you’re a man hair loss can be reversed however you cannot grow hair on a head that is already bald. The best hair loss treatments work well but you need to act fast.

What Can Be Done About Male Baldness?

Posted under hair-loss by Nichole Berry on Saturday 26 September 2009

Male baldness can affect any man at some point in their lives. For some it happens earlier in life than others. There are hair loss products on the market to help, as well as products claiming to be a baldness cure and many other hair loss products, some good, some little more than a glorified moisturiser.

There can be many causes of baldness, some of which we are not even aware. The reasons we know of are that men sometimes go bald with age, where as some do not, it can also be something that a man has inherited from him family, or it could be ill health that is the cause, even the treatments in some cases can be the cause of thinning hair or baldness. Although some men have chosen to wear a wig, some of them can look very false and there is also the danger of them embarrassingly blowing or falling off.

Cosmetic surgery is another option for sufferers of male baldness. The way this works is by removing hair from other parts of the body from the root. This is then put onto the bald head. After hair loss treatment of this king the survival rate of hair that has been implanted is 90 to 100%.

One method that leaves less scarring than the above, yet has the same success results is where the surgeon takes the hair in the same way but implants it with a tool similar to a small punch, this implants the hair in a similar pattern as if you look at a dolls hair.

After hair transplantation the hair that has been transplanted will fall out, this hair loss is only temporary and it will grow back in time, giving you hair that grows naturally.

One product available for male baldness is in tablet form, such tablets contain an ingredient called MSM, which has been researched and is also thought to help hair growth.

Another ingredient included in some hair loss products is NAC, this product is also known to help minimise hair loss and has been and still is used in many hair loss products.

There are many other hair loss products also available; these include conditioners, lotions and also creams that are applied to the head directly. These products can either be massaged in and washed out, or in the case of some they have to be left in to be given time to work and become effective.

A thinning comb is also available, and for those who prefer to use a brush, they also have one of those. You can choose which is best for you depending on the length of your hair. The brushes and combs claim to keep the hair nourished and also to look thicker. Although this is not a treatment for baldness, it can help those beginning to suffer from hair loss to keep the hair they already have and by making it look thicker it will hide the thinner parts. There is a satisfaction report back of 90%.

There is a type of hair gel also available, although this is more of prevention than a cure. It is supposed to help combat the early signs of baldness, such as hair thinning, and is to stop the problem from getting any worse.

Some hair loss products work by ensuring the DHT blockers are stopped. DHT is an abbreviation for dihydrotestosterone. When DHT is blocked this can cause the male pattern baldness that is often seen.

There are many different hair loss products available for baldness, thinning hair and many that claim to be a cure, some work better than others. Those that do work give men a higher level of confidence especially those who are worried about the hair loss when they have watched other men in their close family suffer from the same thing. None of the hair loss products are an overnight cure, and any that claim to be should be avoided at all costs.
